Chair of Systematic Zoology

 matschiner

The Chair of Systematic Zoology has been held since December 1, 2024 by
Prof. Dr. Michael Matschiner.
At the same time he is head of the Zoological State Collection Munich (SNSB).

In research, teaching and scientific advise he is supported by Dr. Moritz Muschick

Associated with the Chair of Systematic Zoology, Prof. Dr. Martin Heß has been working since 2004 on topics of special zoology.

As independent postdocs in this area, Dr. Timea Neusser and Dr. Isabelle Maiditsch work on their own research topics.

TA Heidemarie Gensler ensures smooth processes in the office and laboratory.

The workgroup is involved in the instruction of young academics (BSc, MSc, Teacher and Dr.) and takes part in the "Munich Graduate School for Evolution, Ecology and Systematics" (EESLMU).

Our Research Topics

Architektur von SehsystemenArchitecture of Sense Organs

Eye structures at the anatomical, histological, and subcellular level 'tell the story' of their function, evolution, and adaptation to habitat and habit (teleosts and some evertebrates). In addition we are interested in the hearing structures of teleosts and their biomechanical properties.

 Methods:

  • digital 3D-microscopy (LM, CLSM, SEM, BFSEM)
  • n-dimensional image data analysis

Organismic Zoology, Malacology in particular

Comparative anatomy, ultrastructure, and phylogeny of molluscs
Methods:

Computer-aided 3D-reconstruction of micro-molluscs (< 3mm)
Histology and electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, CLSM)

Using our range of methods, various collaborations on 3D structural projects take place in our working group. (e.g. sperm, neuropils, dinoflagellates, plant cells ...)
